Kamal Haasan returned to the silver screens in a Mani Ratnam movie, 'Thug Life.' The movie, which has run into controversy in Karnataka over Kamal Haasan's statement that Kannada came out of Tamil, received mixed reviews from fans and critics alike.
The movie was released on June 5 across the world in four languages, missing Kannada. Kamal Haasan reunited with Mani Ratnam after a gap of almost 38 years. The first time they worked was in Nayakan in 1987.
The movie has managed to collect Rs 17 crore net in India in all the languages on the opening day.
Thug Life had an occupancy of 52.06% in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, June 05. The morning shows had 50.66%, the afternoon shows had 50.35%, the evening shows had 45.15% and the night shows saw a rise with 62.07% occupancy in Tamil Nadu.
On Thursday, June 5, 2025, the total Hindi occupancy for Thug Life was 5.79 percent.
The early shows were 4.79 percent, the afternoon shows were 6.61%, and the evening and night shows had a mere 5.80% and 5.97% occupancy.
In Telugu languages, Thug Life had an overall occupancy of just 21.36% on Day 1. In the morning shows it was 22.43%, followed by 23.61 % in the afternoon and the evening and night shows saw only 19.71% and 19.69%, respectively.
The film will get tough competition from Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh starrer comedy film Housefull 5, which hits theatres today (June 6).

According to Moneycontrol's review, Thug Life’ brings Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan back together after decades, but the result is a muddled, overlong crime drama. Despite flashes of style and a committed Haasan, the film struggles to find coherence or emotional depth.
