Warner Bros. has postponed the release of Batman 2 by a year, now scheduled for October 1, 2027. DC Studios co-chairman James Gunn defended the delay, calling it a standard practice for sequels.
As reported by Deadline, Warner Bros. announced the new release date of 'Batman 2', recently. Marking a postponement of one year from its original release date, the film is now slated to release in theatres worldwide on October 1, 2027. James has defended the choice by recounting the gap between the sequels of hit films like Alien, Incredibles, Terminator, Avatar, Top Gun and others.
James Gunn defended the delay of Batman 2, explaining that long gaps between sequels are not uncommon in the film industry. He cited examples such as the 5-year gap between sequels, mentioning that there were 7 years between Alien and Aliens, 14 years between The Incredibles films, 7 years between the first two Terminator movies, 13 years between Avatar sequels, 36 years between Top Gun films, and 6 years between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Vol. 3.
According to a Deadline report, James Gunn confirmed that the delay was due to the script not being complete. He explained that the reason for the postponement was the lack of a full script, noting that those who follow him closely would likely already be aware of this. "Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films," he stated.
Following the pandemic, Warner Bros. saw significant success with the 2022 gritty Batman film starring Robert Pattinson, thanks to its day-and-date release strategy on Max. According to Deadline, the film grossed USD 369.3 million domestically and USD 772 million internationally.
In another update, the release date previously assigned to Batman 2 has now been claimed by Alejandro González Iñárritu's untitled project starring Tom Cruise.
