Superstar Rajinikanth’s much-awaited action thriller Coolie hit theaters on August 14, 2025, and has already created waves at the box office. However, the film is now at the center of a legal battle after its producers challenged the Central Board of Film Certification’s (CBFC) decision to grant it an “A” certificate.
According to a report by Times Now, the makers, Sun Pictures, filed a petition in the Madras High Court, claiming that the CBFC’s rating has restricted the film’s reach among family audiences. They argued that Coolie’s high-octane action sequences are no more intense than those featured in blockbusters like KGF and Beast, both of which received U/A certification.
Justice TV Thamilselvi admitted the petition, opening the door for further deliberations. However, the CBFC defended its stance, pointing out that Sun TV Network Limited had earlier declined the board’s suggestion to make additional cuts necessary for a U/A certificate.
Additional Solicitor General Sundaresan, representing the CBFC, explained in court: “At the time of hearing, it was proposed to them that if they wanted a U/A certificate, some more cuts had to be made. They made an endorsement saying they don’t want any cuts. They accepted the A certificate.” The CBFC has now sought time until August 25, 2025, to file a counter-affidavit.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie tells the story of Devaraj, also known as Deva, a former union leader who lives in obscurity for over three decades. The death of his close friend Rajasekhar forces him back into action, reigniting an old rivalry with Simon Xavier, a ruthless smuggler tied to Deva’s past. The film’s gripping storyline pits two powerful forces against each other in a battle of vengeance and justice.
The ensemble cast features Nagarjuna Akkineni, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Rachita Ram, Sathyaraj, and others, alongside Rajinikanth in the lead. Bollywood star Aamir Khan also makes a special cameo appearance, adding to the film’s star power.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth has already begun work on Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. The sequel to his 2023 blockbuster will reportedly bring back Mohanlal and Shiva Rajkumar in their roles. Buzz in the industry also hints at a possible collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan under Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction, though an official confirmation is awaited.
