Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai recently made a guest appearance on the popular podcast Game Changers, hosted by trade analyst Komal Nahta. During their conversation, Ghai delved into the vital role that music has played in his iconic films, offering fascinating insights into how he approached music as a cornerstone of storytelling. Known for his musical blockbusters, Ghai’s understanding of how music shapes the narrative was truly enlightening.
In the episode, Nahta, known for his sharp and thought-provoking questions, asked Ghai, "Subhashji, music was a very important part of your films. You gave one superhit song after another. But was there a different way of creating your music? How did you work on it?"
Ghai, reflecting on his career, shared, "In our time, when we had even bigger music hits, there was only one difference: I considered music as poetry. For me, Anand Bakshi was even greater than Laxmikant Pyarelal and Rahman. I used to write the spoken dialogues in the movie, and you [Anand Bakshi] were writing the singing dialogues. And when we wrote the 'antara' (stanza), it felt like he knew my story better than I did."
The filmmaker went on to highlight the profound relationship between music and narrative in his work, praising lyricist Anand Bakshi’s ability to translate the core emotions of the story into unforgettable songs. This collaboration, according to Ghai, was a pivotal factor in creating music that not only complemented the storyline but also became an integral part of the audience's cinematic experience.
Subhash Ghai's collaborative and innovative approach to integrating music with narrative is one of the key reasons why his films continue to be remembered for their exceptional soundtracks. Through Game Changers, Komal Nahta is providing a fresh and in-depth look at the minds behind some of Indian cinema's greatest moments.
