Bollywood actor Soha Ali Khan, who recently made a comeback to the screen with the horror sequel Chhorii 2, has opened up about the online trolling she often faces—particularly concerning her interfaith marriage to fellow actor Kunal Kemmu.
In a recent conversation, the Rang De Basanti star spoke candidly about how social media users question her religious identity during festival posts and how she has learnt to take such negativity in her stride.
Soha, a member of one of India’s most illustrious film and political families, has not been immune to the scrutiny that comes with marrying outside one’s faith.
Speaking to Screen, she reflected on the bizarre fixation some users have with her religion.
“I have gotten a bit thick-skinned; it doesn’t bother me. But one thing that amuses me is how, when I post something, people start commenting on my religion. Because I have married into a Hindu family, my mother has a Hindu surname and she married a Muslim man. Usually, if we post something on Diwali, they ask how many rozas I have kept. If we post on Holi, there are comments asking what kind of Muslim I am. It doesn’t bother me, but it is something that I do notice,” Soha remarked.
Even after being married to Kunal since 2015 and raising their daughter Inaaya Naumi Kemmu together, Soha says that criticism of their interfaith relationship has not decreased. The couple, who initially met on the set of Dhoondte Reh Jaoge, frequently post sweet photos of family gatherings on Instagram, but comments frequently cast doubt on their religious observances.
Soha returned to the limelight with a crucial part in Vishal Furia's Chhorii 2. She portrays the antagonist "Daasi Maa" in the movie, which also stars Nushrratt Bharuccha and Gashmeer Mahajani. Despite the film's mixed reviews, many people praised Soha and Nushrratt's performances. Prime Video is currently streaming the horror-thriller.
