Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone's Pathaan, which released in January 2023, became a colossal blockbuster, reigniting excitement for the Bollywood superstar's return to the big screen. Rumours about a Pathaan sequel have been circulating since the film's success, and now fresh updates suggest that Pathaan 2 is indeed in the works.
While Siddharth Anand, who directed the first film, will not return for the sequel, new developments point towards an exciting phase ahead.
As per Peeping Moon's latest report, Aditya Chopra has locked the script for Pathaan 2, and the production is set to begin in the first quarter of 2026. The scripting phase, which commenced in mid-2023, has now been completed, with Chopra working alongside Sridhar Raghavan and Abbas Tyrewala.
A source close to the production revealed, "Aditya has been working on the script for Pathaan 2 since mid-2023. The sequel is designed not only to carry forward Pathaan's story but also to lay the groundwork for larger conflicts in upcoming installments of YRF’s Spy Universe."
The source further mentioned that the intricate and ambitious storytelling is what delayed the writing process, but the result is an exhilarating script that promises to surpass the first film's scale and intensity.
Shah Rukh Khan has also been consulted on the direction of the script and is reportedly excited about the sequel's prospects.
Despite the script being locked, the hunt for a new director is still ongoing, as Siddharth Anand will not return to direct the sequel. Aditya Chopra is looking for someone to bring a fresh perspective to Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic spy character.
Preparations for the highly anticipated sequel will commence in the last quarter of this year. Shah Rukh Khan is expected to begin shooting for Pathaan 2 after completing his work on King, which is being directed by Siddharth Anand and stars his daughter, Suhana Khan.
King is slated for a 2026 release.
