The alleged knife attack on Saif Ali Khan on January 16 continues to raise eyebrows, as forensic expert Prof Dinesh Rao disputes the claim that a knife caused the injuries described in the medico-legal report submitted by Lilavati Hospital.
Speaking to a news channel, Prof Rao pointed out that the "lacerations" described in the report, signed by Dr Bhargavi Patil, are consistent with injuries caused by a blunt object rather than a sharp-edged weapon like a knife. This observation aligns with statements from Saif’s staff nurse, who had earlier informed police that the alleged attacker, Shariful Islam, was wielding a stick-like object and a hacksaw blade, not a knife.
Lilavati Hospital, however, maintains that a 2.5-inch knife fragment was surgically removed from near Saif's spinal column. Police reports also claim two additional knife fragments were recovered—one at Saif’s residence and another near Bandra Talao, allegedly discarded by the suspect while fleeing.
Another twist to the investigation is a report from Mid-day that quotes sources from the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) revealing that fingerprints from the crime scene do not match those of Shariful Islam Shehzad.
Adding to the confusion, Prof Rao’s comments have drawn attention to inconsistencies in the hospital's report. For instance, while the attack is said to have occurred at 2:30 am, Saif’s admission at Lilavati Hospital is logged at 4:11 am, leaving a two-hour gap. Questions have also arisen about why Kareena Kapoor Khan remained at home while their friend, Afsar Zaidi, transported Saif and their son, Taimur, to the hospital in an autorickshaw.
Speculation suggests Kareena may not have been in a condition to accompany Saif, as she had reportedly been partying earlier that evening. This decision has invited scrutiny, particularly regarding why Taimur was involved in such a distressing situation.
The case, meanwhile, continues to unravel with each new revelation, leaving more questions than answers.
