Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has expressed his excitement about the possibilities of R-rated narratives under the Disney umbrella. Even in the family-friendly realm of Disney's extensive intellectual properties, the Deadpool actor shared his creative vision for more emotionally complex stories in a recent episode of The Box Office Podcast.

Following the success of the 2024 MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine—a bold R-rated entry that struck a chord with audiences—Reynolds revealed an intriguing concept he had proposed.

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property? It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use. And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion. I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.’”

Though he expressed creative excitement, Reynolds made it clear he had no intention of appearing in such a project.
“I’m not saying I want to be in it. That would be a bad fit. I’d want to produce and write or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really with Star Wars because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people,” he said, highlighting his desire to bring nuance and depth to beloved franchises through subtle, character-driven storytelling.

Meanwhile, fans are upset about major scheduling changes at Marvel Studios. The May release dates of two eagerly awaited Avengers films, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, have been rescheduled. In their stead, the studio has now scheduled untitled Disney projects.

Instead of its original release date of May 1, 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will now arrive on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars has also been postponed from May 2, 2027, to December 17, 2027.

Marvel fans may be disappointed by this reorganisation, but it also represents a larger reevaluation of Disney's film universe, which could open the door for daring, fresh artistic endeavours, such as the one Reynolds is supporting.
