Filmmaker Ryan Coogler has penned a heartfelt message to audiences around the world following the stunning box office debut of his latest feature film, Sinners. The period horror thriller, headlined by long-time collaborator Michael B Jordan in dual roles, has become an instant success story, both commercially and emotionally.
Opening to $48 million domestically and $63 million globally, Sinners exceeded expectations and made headlines for achieving the second-highest Monday gross ever for an R-rated horror film, earning $7.8 million. Only It (2017) had a stronger Monday performance in the genre, pulling in $8.76 million.
Ryan Coogler wrote a letter filled with gratitude. “Eternal gratitude. My heart is bursting with it,” the director wrote. “I want to thank each and every one of you who bought a ticket to see Sinners. Who decided to drive to see the film in different formats. Who bought popcorn and a drink, booked a sitter and carpooled, and stood in the lobby afterward and talked and made a friend. Who changed their work schedules. Who saw the film in groups.”
Sinners, rooted in themes of ancestry, community, and intergenerational trauma, holds special personal significance for Coogler. “I had the gift of the opportunity of making a film inspired by my family and my ancestry,” he explained. “But it was always a film that we wanted to make for audiences, in theaters.”
The Black Panther and Creed director emphasised his belief in the theatrical experience. “I believe in cinema. I believe in the theatrical experience. I believe it is a necessary pillar of society,” he wrote. “It’s why me and so many of my colleagues have dedicated our lives to the craft.”
He went on to reflect on how the global audience has given him the opportunity to build not only a career but also a life. “We don’t get to do what we do if you don’t show up,” he said. “To see your response to the film has invigorated me and many others who believe in this art form.”
He also credited the film’s success with helping sustain his career and support his family, saying,“Michael did EXCEPTIONAL work on this film that isn’t being talked about enough, and he missed the press tour to spend time with his beautiful kid."
Apart from acknowledging his long association with Michael B. Jordan, Ludwig Goransson and Zinzi Coogler, Ryan gave a special shout out to the editor Michael Shawver and wrote, “Michael did EXCEPTIONAL work on this film that isn’t being talked about enough, and he missed the press tour to spend time with his beautiful kid."
