Rick Moranis is officially stepping back into the spotlight. The comedy icon, who vanished from live-action movies in the late 1990s, is reprising his fan-favorite role as Lord Dark Helmet in Spaceballs 2. Yes, the galaxy just got sillier again.
Amazon MGM confirmed production is underway and revealed the full lineup. Alongside Rick Moranis, fans will see Bill Pullman return as Lone Starr, Mel Brooks as Yogurt, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz. The sequel also ropes in fresh talent—Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, and Anthony Carrigan.
Cast and Crew at the Table Read
The studio even dropped a behind-the-scenes snapshot from the cast’s table read, sparking a wave of excitement online. Josh Greenbaum, best known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar, is directing. The script comes from Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez.
The official press note couldn’t resist poking fun, teasing: “The title is rumored to be the name of the movie, and plot details are being described as information about what happens in the story.” Basically, classic Mel Brooks humor. The film is slated for a 2027 theatrical release.
A Long Hiatus Finally Ends
Rick Moranis stepped away from Hollywood in the 1990s following the death of his wife, Ann Belsky. While he voiced characters here and there, he last appeared on screen in 1997’s Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves. A planned comeback in 2020 for another Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel was scrapped due to COVID.
Now, at long last, Rick Moranis is back—and fans couldn’t be happier. Mel Brooks, at 99, is also onboard as producer alongside Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Jeb Brody.
