  • CBFC revising committee to review film amid political tensions
  • Election rules may delay film's certification and release

The political action drama Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay and directed by H. Vinoth, is still shrouded in mystery. The announcement of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election schedule has made things even more difficult for the film, which was already having trouble getting its certification.

The Election Commission of India has announced that the state will hold elections on April 23. This has raised fears that officials may try to stop the film from coming out during the election period. The problem comes from the fact that the movie is said to have a political plot and that Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is running for office.

Scheduled Review of the Revising Committee

The film is set to be shown to a revising committee of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in Chennai on March 17, even though things are getting more and more uncertain. T. S. Nagabharana, a well-known Kannada filmmaker, is said to be in charge of the meeting, which was put off because one of the committee members was sick.

The committee's decision is even more important now that the Model Code of Conduct is in effect right after the election announcement. The board may hold off on certifying the film until after the election if it thinks the film's content could affect voters.

A Release Plan That Fell Apart

Originally, Jana Nayagan was supposed to be Vijay's last movie before he became a full-time politician. It was supposed to come out on Pongal on January 9. In December 2025, the filmmakers sent the movie in for certification. At first, an examining committee suggested a U/A 16+ certificate with some cuts.

After making the necessary changes, the producers sent the film back in, but they were surprised to hear that it had been sent to a revising committee instead of being approved.

Legal Fight and More Delays

The producers went to the Madras High Court for help. At first, a judge told the CBFC to issue the certificate, but later a division bench overturned that order. In the end, the filmmakers dropped their lawsuit, putting the final decision back in the hands of the board.

The recommendations of the revising committee will now decide the fate of Jana Nayagan, as elections are coming up and political tensions are high. People who follow the industry say that even if the movie gets certified, the timing of its release may still be affected by election rules.

Fans who are excitedly waiting for Vijay's swan song before he runs for office will have to wait a little longer. How regulators balance artistic freedom with election rules will determine if the movie comes out in theatres before or after the polls.
