Born on March 11, 1940, in Amravati, Daya Dongre grew up in a family deeply rooted in the performing arts. Her mother, Yamunatai Modak, was a respected actress, and her aunt Shanta Modak was both an actress and singer. After completing her schooling in Dharwad, Karnataka, she pursued her higher education in Pune and later joined the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi to study theatre formally.
Although she could not complete her NSD training due to marriage, her husband Shekhar encouraged her to continue acting. With his support, Daya resumed her artistic journey and became one of the most respected names in Marathi theatre. Her powerful performances in plays like Tuzhi Majhi Jodi Jamli Re, Nanda Saukhya Bhare, Yachasathi Kela Hota Atthahas, and Lekure Udand Jali established her as a versatile performer.
