Reactions all over the nation have been triggered by the Supreme Court's recent order to relocate all stray dogs in the Delhi-NCR area to shelters.
Strong opposition has been expressed by animal rights advocates and a number of Bollywood celebrities, who have called the action harsh and needless.
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, on the other hand, has deviated from the majority by publicly supporting the court's position and igniting more discussion with his candid comments on social media.
Taking to X, the Sarkar director shared a string of posts in defence of the decision. He asserted that human life must take precedence, writing: “From a human beings perspective , humans come first, and like all living beings they have a right to defend themselves from any other species who pose a danger to them , be it mosquitoes or dogs ..And what I don’t understand about the so called animal lovers is , why is their love so selectively discriminate ? instead of restricting to dogs ,why don’t they equally love all God created creatures like rats, caterpillars , cockroaches and even CORONAVIRUS ?”

Varma went on to highlight what he sees as double standards among animal lovers. In another post, he pointed out: “Hey Animal Lovers , Chicken and fish are living beings too no ? So how come you kill . cut , cook and eat them ? All I am asking is why this discrimination between god created creatures ? It echoes how humans discriminate between caste , religion , colour etc .. How is it the caterpillars fault if God created it ugly ? If you are true to your love , you should replace your exotic dogs and gold fish with lizards, mosquitoes , lice , termites , maggots etc.”

Challenging the popular belief that dogs are inherently loyal, he added: “A dog is loyal only because it doesn’t know how to be disloyal … and I say to all the radical dog lovers out there , when you say “ Dogs are better than humans “ it’s a comment on the particular humans around you , and not really on your particular dogs.”

Turning to the dangers of strays in public areas, Varma remarked: “Bottom line is anybody can love any god created creature whether it’s a human , dog, cat , mosquito ,rat , corona virus etc as long as they are in their home , but here we are talking about stray dogs killing children on streets.” He concluded with a scathing comment directed at activists: “And if the dog lovers are blaming the government administrators , they should go and bite the officers and politicians on their legs and also various other parts of their bodies for them to speed up on solutions .. But meanwhile they should think of the poor kids who are being brutally killed by street stray dogs.”

The bench is hearing a suo motu case and related pleas on the stray dog issue. The judges noted that the "inaction" of civic authorities, who had neglected to correctly implement the Animal Birth Control Rules regarding vaccination and sterilisation, was the root of the "whole problem."
