Coolie, Rajinikanth's most recent film, has soared to the top of the global box office, taking the top spot this past weekend with a staggering global gross of about USD 44 million.
In the process, according to Pinkvilla, the Tamil superstar's film surpassed both the highly anticipated Japanese anime film Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle (USD 37 million) and Hollywood's Weapons (USD 43.40 million).
Naturally, India has contributed USD 26.50 million, or a sizable amount of Coolie's earnings. The movie did well abroad as well, earning USD 6.25 million in North America, USD 3.75 million in the Middle East, and an additional USD 7.50 million from other international regions.
Remarkably, the movie took the top spot at the box office in Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and India. It came in second place in Singapore and Malaysia, right behind Demon Slayer. Additionally, it made it into the top ten charts in Australia, the UK, and North America, demonstrating Rajinikanth's ongoing appeal on a global scale.
According to Comscore, Coolie is now only the second Tamil film and the fifth Indian film to ever top the global box office rankings. It was preceded by Master, RRR, Brahmāstra, and Animal on this exclusive list.
Leo, the last film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, made it to the worldwide chart as well, but it lost to Killers of the Flower Moon by a slim margin.
With an estimated USD 29 million in revenue, War 2, another high-profile Indian film starring Hrithik Roshan and NTR Jr., has also made it into the top ten worldwide. Its exact ranking has not yet been determined.
Coolie is still doing well at home. The movie has made a total of Rs 193.25 crore after four days of release in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada. Industry watchers predict the movie will surpass the Rs 200 crore mark by Monday, solidifying its status as a blockbuster, even though Sunday's earnings (Rs 34 crore) were marginally lower than Saturday's (Rs 39.5 crore).
