Park Jin-young joins government to take K pop on global stage

The singer, producer, and creator of JYP Entertainment, Park Jin-young, is now taking on a new role outside of the studio and stage.

An advisory group that works closely with the South Korean government, the Presidential Committee on Popular Culture Exchange, has now officially welcomed the hitmaker as its member.

His goal is to contribute to the global development of Korean culture and K-pop.

Accordign to The Chosun Daily, in a personal statement released on 9th Septemper, Park admitted that joining a government committee wasn’t something he took lightly. “As an entertainment industry professional, taking on government work felt burdensome and daunting, but K-pop is currently facing a very special opportunity. I made this decision with the resolve to seize this moment and ensure we leap to the next level.”

Park has never been one to sit back. He spoke with conviction about his decades-long dream of taking K-pop global — a vision that started long before Korean music was topping international charts. “My dream has remained unchanged since 2003, when I blindly went to the U.S. and personally distributed promotional materials to record labels, or in 2009 when the Wonder Girls became the first K-pop act to enter the Billboard Hot 100. My dream is for K-pop to be loved worldwide.”

Interestingly, Park’s statement came on the same day that Sunmi, a former Wonder Girls member, appeared on YouTube show ‘Salon de Lip 2’, reflecting on their early American debut. It was a tough time, she recalled, with long hours on the road and makeshift living arrangements.

“We spent 17 hours on a tour bus, solving both lodging and meals. There were many complaints on broadcasts about ‘why we were brought to the U.S.,’ but now I’m truly grateful.”

What stood out most was her memory of Park’s hands-on dedication. “When the Wonder Girls were busking, JYP’s Park Jin-young PD personally handed out promotional booklets. He was not even 40 years old at the time. Looking back, it was a fearless challenge and the true spirit of youth.”

Fans were moved by the timing of both statements. Online, many praised Park for continuing to pave the way for K-pop, this time from inside the system. Comments like, “He was hands-on back then, and now he’s handling institutional foundations—it’s bound to succeed,” and “Only Park Jin-young could pull off this story,” show just how much public trust he carries.
