Netflix to bring first live action series of Scooby-Doo

Netflix is officially moving forward with the live-action launch of Scooby-Doo, months after announcing the project in March. The series, based on Hanna-Barbera's crime-solving group, is under development at Warner Bros. Television with Berlanti Productions and Midnight Radio. Josh Appelbaum and Scott Rosenberg will serve as showrunners.

According to Variety, the initial production details suggested that the plot will revolve around Shaggy, Daphne, Velma and Fred as they embark on their last summer at summer camp. Their lives are turned upside down when they come face to face with an isolated Great Dane puppy, soon to be Scooby-Doo, who turns out to be an integral witness in a paranormal murder case.

The official synopsis states that the series will provide a modern take on the original cartoon, with mystery, friendship and supernatural suspense elements. As they attempt to crack the case, they endure a harrowing experience that risks revealing their most protected secrets.

The synopsis reads, “A modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog. During their final summer at camp, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever so handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”

The initial season is scheduled to have eight episodes that are an hour long. Although there has not been an official title released, the Writers Guild of America currently has it listed as Scooby-Doo! The Live-Action Series.

Though Warner Bros. TV Group head Channing Dungey earlier suggested filming could potentially start towards the end of 2025, more recent reports now put production beginning in early 2026.

With its mix of dark fascination and teenage adventure, the new series is set to become a huge streaming phenomenon for Netflix. Viewers will now be awaiting casting announcements, thespian fare & above all, the initial unveiling of Scooby himself.
