The buzz around Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2: Thaandavam is already loud back home, but the early signals from the US box office paint a slightly mixed picture. The film is still more than three weeks away from release, yet advance bookings overseas have begun trickling in.
According to early estimates, the makers have collected around USD 42,000, which roughly stands at Rs 37 lakh, for the premiere shows in the United States.
What this really means is that the sequel has made a modest start internationally, especially given how Telugu films usually command strong early interest in the US market. The numbers matter even more because this is a direct continuation of the 2021 blockbuster Akhanda, a film that not only revived Balakrishna’s box-office momentum but also became one of his most iconic performances in recent years.
The expectations are clearly higher this time. Akhanda 2 has been mounted on a massive budget reportedly crossing Rs 200 crore, the highest of Balakrishna’s career. With a film of this scale and a franchise with proven recall, early bookings below the typical Telugu big-film curve feel a bit surprising. Still, industry watchers believe the film has enough time to pick up pace. With 22 days left for release, projections suggest the advance sale could easily touch USD 400,000 if momentum builds closer to premiere week.
The film brings back Balakrishna as the fierce and mystical Aghora avatar, a character that struck a chord with fans in the first installment.
Directed once again by Boyapati Sreenu, the sequel leans heavily into its spiritual and mythological roots, blending action, lore, and Balakrishna’s larger-than-life screen presence. The cast also includes Samyuktha Menon, Aadhi Pinisetty, and Harshaali Malhotra, creating a mix of familiar faces and fresh energy.
Production-wise, Akhanda 2 has been an ambitious journey. The shoot began in Hyderabad in October 2024, followed by significant schedules in the Himalayas and at the Kumbh Mela. Portions were also shot internationally in Georgia. By August 2025, the team wrapped up principal photography, with Balakrishna finishing dubbing soon after.
The team behind the film is now gearing up for a major promotional push. They’re expected to be in Mumbai on November 14 to unveil a new song, tapping into national buzz before the film hits screens. Balakrishna also comes into this release riding the success of Daaku Maharaj, which minted over Rs 91 crore in India. All eyes are now on whether Akhanda 2 can match or surpass that wave once it finally arrives in theatres.
