Bollywood playback legend Kumar Sanu has welcomed a significant legal development in his ongoing dispute with his former wife, Rita Bhattacharya, after the Bombay High Court granted him interim relief in a high‑stakes defamation lawsuit. The court’s order also includes a gag injunction restraining Bhattacharya and certain media outlets from making or sharing further allegedly defamatory statements about the singer or his family.

Sanu filed the Rs 50‑crore suit in December 2025, alleging that Bhattacharya’s recent interviews — circulated widely on social media and digital platforms — contained false and harmful claims that damaged his reputation and professional standing.

Reacting to the court’s ruling, the 67‑year‑old singer expressed deep appreciation to the Hon’ble Bombay High Court and his legal counsel, advocate Sana Raees Khan, for protecting his dignity and decades‑long work in the music industry.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times he said, "My reputation is the result of years of dedication and my family should never have had to suffer because of the defamatory statements that affected my reputation and our dignity.”

Under the interim order, Bhattacharya — who was previously heard alleging various claims about Sanu during interviews — is now barred from writing, posting, publishing, or disseminating any statements that could be considered defamatory. Independent media houses named in the suit are also subject to the restraint.

Sanu’s legal team has emphasized its faith in the judicial process and indicated that the singer will continue to pursue the case to its conclusion, reinforcing the principle that reputation and dignity are protected rights under Indian law.

Sanu, who split from Bhattacharya in 1994 and finalized their divorce in 2001, is claiming Rs 50 crore in damages. He contends that she has repeatedly shared false allegations about him via social media and interviews, causing significant damage to his reputation and professional goodwill.
