Mumbai’s famous studio to be demolished, 69-storey luxury tower planned In Mahalaxmi

After standing tall for nearly eight decades as one of Bollywood’s most iconic creative spaces, Mumbai’s Famous Studios in Mahalaxmi is set to be demolished. In its place, developers have announced plans for a 69-storey luxury residential tower, signaling the end of an era for a landmark that shaped Indian cinema.

Founded in 1943 by J.B. Roongta, Famous Studios quickly established itself as a hub of innovation and excellence. It was among the first in India to offer state-of-the-art shooting floors, sound recording setups, and post-production facilities under one roof. Over the decades, it hosted legendary filmmakers, actors, and technicians who created some of Bollywood’s most memorable works. The studio was also a preferred destination for high-profile advertising shoots, documentaries, and television productions.

Generations of cinephiles and industry professionals recall Famous Studios not just as a working space, but as a symbol of Mumbai’s cultural identity. From black-and-white classics to modern blockbusters, its walls have witnessed the evolution of Indian cinema. Yet, like many heritage film studios across the city, it has succumbed to the pressures of urban development and soaring real estate value.

The new project envisions a luxury residential skyscraper, catering to Mumbai’s growing demand for premium housing in central locations. While it may redefine the city’s skyline, the demolition also underscores a poignant reality: the gradual erasure of Mumbai’s cinematic landmarks.

The closure of Famous Studios follows a broader trend where traditional creative spaces are being replaced by high-rises and commercial complexes. Industry veterans have expressed concern that such changes, while economically lucrative, may dilute the city’s identity as the heart of Indian filmmaking.

As the bulldozers prepare to move in, Mumbai prepares to bid farewell to a studio that was not just a workplace, but a cradle of stories, dreams, and cinematic history. The 69-storey tower may rise in its place, but the legacy of Famous Studios will continue to live on in the countless films, memories, and cultural milestones it helped bring to life.
