Production house A24 has acquired the U.S. rights to one of the biggest crossover projects at the moment, Ruben Östlund’s ‘The Entertainment System is Down’. The 8 figure deal gives A24 distribution rights to the Keanu Reeves starrer film.
‘The Entertainment System is Down’ is being described as a social satire revolving around self absorbed passengers on a long haul flight in which the entertainment system fails and the passengers are forced to do something horrific - feel bored.
Reportedly, the two time Palme d’Or winner Ruben Östlund and his producer Erik Hemmendorf procured an actual Boeing 747 for the film.
The cast of the film is led by Keanu Reeves starring alongside Kirsten Dunst, Daniel Brühl, Nicholas Braun and Samantha Morton. It is being reported that Dunst and Brühl will be playing a married couple.
Östlund has plans to premiere ‘The Entertainment System is Down’ at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
During a press event at Cannes, Östlund revealed an interesting detail regarding the film, “the story begins when a man falls asleep and his wife, out of boredom, unlocks his phone using face ID to discover he has had multiple affairs.”
The Oscar nominated actor also spoke about the difficulties of movie on a plane.
“It’s f-ing hard to make a good airplane movie,” he said.
He also told the press that he will mount the production over 70 days in a studio lot.
“We bought the plane and it was quite early in the process of the film. So suddenly it was like, ‘Oh, we have to make this film,” Östlund added.
This project marks Östlund’s second film in the English language. The film comes after his 3 time Academy award nominated film ‘Triangle Of Sadness’. The film also won the Palme d’Or in 2022. The film starred Harris Dickinson, Woody Harreslson, and Charlbi Dean Kriek.
