Mohanlal: A soldier, singer, and a stage artist - the other side of Lalettan not many know of

Happy Birthday Mohanlal

When most people think of Mohanlal, they picture the suave superstar, the intense performer from Drishyam, or the effortless comic genius from Kilukkam. But behind the megastar persona lies a lesser-seen, equally fascinating Mohanlal — the soldier, the singer, and the stage artist. Let's explore these facets of Lalettan, the icon who has ruled Indian cinema for over four decades.

A soldier at heart

Not many know that Mohanlal is a commissioned honorary lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army of India, a rare honour bestowed upon a civilian for his patriotic contribution and discipline. Mohanlal’s connection to the armed forces isn’t just ceremonial — it’s deeply emotional. His role in the war film Kandahar (2010), which was endorsed by the Ministry of Defence, showed how much he reveres the Indian soldiers.

He has often spoken about his admiration for the armed forces and continues to use his stature to promote awareness and respect for the military. In 2012, he even underwent a 21-day training program with the army — a gesture that few celebrities would dare to undertake.

A melodious soul

While he may not be marketed as a playback singer, Mohanlal’s voice has charmed audiences in more ways than one. Over the years, he has lent his vocals to several songs — from the catchy Attumanal Payayil in Run Baby Run to devotional numbers and nostalgic melodies. His live stage performances and duets with legends like KJ Yesudas have left fans awestruck.

The theatre performer

Before he became a cinematic icon, Mohanlal honed his skills on the stage. His performance in the Sanskrit play Karnabharam, directed by Kavalam Narayana Panicker, stunned audiences and critics alike. Mohanlal played the role of Karna in this classical production.

He also participated in Chayamukhi, a modern drama where he played Bheema alongside Mukesh’s Keechaka.

Whether donning the uniform with pride, singing with soul, or holding the stage with intensity, Mohanlal proves time and again that his artistry transcends the silver screen.
