Mandala Murders tops Netflix charts, creator Gopi Puthran credits India’s mythological roots

Mandala Murders created new streaming record

Mandala Murders recently hit Netflix and continues to break new records. The series has bagged the top spot of streaming giant’s Top 10 TV Shows in India for 12 days straight. Additionally, the series has also entered the global top 10 non-English series charts on the platform.

However, director and creator Gopi Puthran has recently reflected on the success of the Netflix series. He has credited India's rooted mythological beliefs, which helped viewers connect with the themes of Mandala Murders.

The filmmaker said, “India is a mythical place, and we have so much potential to draw inspiration from this and create content that resonates with people. As citizens, I feel we are all drawn to this as it is in our DNA.”

He elaborated, “When we grow up, we are told stories about mythological beings and events that could have happened in our country and that has had a deep impact on us psychologically. So, when we can create the right content that is steeped into our roots, our belief systems and our culture, it can get wide acclaim and love.”

Gopi expressed his deep gratitude for the love received for Mandala Murders, believing it was because of the reasons he had mentioned before. He said he was pleased that the original concept of Mandala led to a binge-worthy show that was trending worldwide.

He looked back at past successes and noted that before the Mandala Murders, Sacred Games had become a cult hit, making them proud on the global stage. He added that blending myth with fiction created a strong appeal for audiences in this region. It could ignite their imagination and remind them of childhood memories or the country’s myths.

Directed by Gopi Puthran and Manan Rawat, Mandala Murders is produced by YRF Entertainment. The Netflix series features a star-studded cast including Vaani Kapoor, Vaibhav Raj Gupta, Surveen Chawla, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Siddhanth Kapoor, Rahul Bagga, Raghubir Yadav, and Monica Choudhary in the key roles.
