On April 18, Akshay Kumar's most recent historical courtroom drama, Kesari Chapter 2, which also features R. Madhavan and Ananya Panday, was released in theatres. In the movie, Kumar plays the brave Indian lawyer C. Sankaran Nair, who famously fought the British Empire in court.
Kesari Chapter 2 was never anticipated to have huge opening numbers comparable to high-octane commercial films like Sikandar because of its niche theme and patriotic undertone. On the other hand, it had a decent opening weekend performance at the box office.
The film collected a solid Rs 7.75 crore on its first day, bolstered by good word of mouth. This positive reception translated into notable growth over the weekend.
On Saturday, collections rose by approximately 25%, bringing in RS 9.75 crore. The momentum continued into Sunday, where the film earned an estimated Rs 12.25 crore. With this, the film’s total weekend collection now stands at a commendable Rs 29.75 crore.
This performance is particularly noteworthy considering the film’s limited release, with just around 1,700 screens nationwide. Despite being a more niche offering in terms of genre, its patriotic theme has resonated well, especially in smaller towns and two- to three-tier cities, where it is finding strong audience support.
Sunny Deol's Jaat, which also saw a slight increase in collections over the weekend, presented a challenge to Kesari Chapter 2. The rising popularity of Kesari 2, which benefited from greater critical and audience acclaim, eclipsed Jaat's earnings of ₹5.15 crore on Sunday.
But now is when the real test starts. It's unclear if the movie can keep up its momentum now that the weekday run has begun. Kesari Chapter 2 may have a steady run at the box office and become a sleeper hit in the upcoming weeks if the word-of-mouth trend stays positive.
