Actor Kalki Koechlin, known for her grounded perspective and graceful public demeanor, recently opened up about attending the wedding of Aaliyah Kashyap—her ex-husband Anurag Kashyap’s daughter with his first wife Aarti Bajaj. Despite their separation in 2015, Kalki attended the wedding, describing the experience as one rooted in emotional maturity and mutual respect.

Kalki and Anurag Kashyap married in 2011 after working together on Dev.D, one of Kashyap’s most iconic films. Their marriage lasted four years before the couple parted ways in 2015. While the separation was emotionally tough for both, they’ve since rebuilt their lives individually. When Aaliyah Kashyap tied the knot with Shane Gregoire in December, Kalki was present at the celebration, showing the strength of the familial bond she still shares with Aaliyah.

In an interview with the YouTube channel Aleena Dissects, Kalki shared, “So much time has passed. We have both moved on in our lives.”

Kalki reflected on the nature of breakups and how they impact not just the couple, but also the network of people involved. “It’s just not that one person you know. It’s all the people around them as well, especially in our industry. You don’t suddenly cut links with all those people,” she said. According to her, relationships create a web of connections, which don’t vanish after a breakup. “There are 300–400 new people you know because of this partner you were with for six years. So, obviously, those ties are not suddenly going to disappear, so we will be in touch,” she added.

One of the most touching aspects of Kalki’s narrative is her relationship with Aaliyah. Despite not being Aaliyah’s biological mother, Kalki has shared a warm relationship with her over the years. Aaliyah was just 10 years old when Kalki married Anurag, and their bond grew naturally over time.

Speaking about Aaliyah, Kalki said, “And Aaliyah is a part of those people that have been in my life because of Anurag. That’s the wonderful thing you get out of breaking up—that there is a whole network of other people you have met because of that person.” She admitted that after the breakup, they needed space and had to set boundaries: “We did have to give ourselves some boundaries and be like ‘I don’t want to see you for some time,’ but the others, I kept seeing and that’s normal, I think.”

Following Aaliyah and Shane’s wedding, Kalki shared a heartfelt message for the newlyweds on social media: “Wish you guys all the ‘ishq, pyaar and mohabbat’ in the world (like the theme of a thousand Bollywood films).” Aaliyah’s reply was just as heartfelt, writing back, “Love you so much!!!”

Kalki also shared memories of Aaliyah’s engagement in 2023. Speaking to India Today, she said, “Aaliyah is very cute with my daughter. They really have kind of a playful thing. So basically, my daughter thinks Aaliyah is a real princess. So she’s in awe of her. It’s good to have one more babysitter around.”

Kalki is now married to Israeli classical pianist Guy Hershberg, and the couple shares a daughter named Sappho, who is now five years old. The blend of her new life and past relationships has created a modern family dynamic—one that accepts, includes, and supports.
