John Lithgow has officially confirmed that he will be playing the legendary character of Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The veteran actor, known for his diverse roles in Dexter and The Crown, expressed his excitement and apprehension about taking on such an iconic role, admitting that the decision was not an easy one.
In an interview with Screen Rant, Lithgow shared his reaction upon receiving the offer: “Well, it came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid.”
He further elaborated on the weight of the role, explaining, “Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”
The Harry Potter series has remained one of the most beloved franchises in pop culture, and Dumbledore, as the wise and enigmatic headmaster of Hogwarts, is a character that holds a special place in the hearts of fans. Originally portrayed by Richard Harris in the first two Harry Potter films and later by Michael Gambon, the role of Dumbledore has always been associated with gravitas and warmth. In the Fantastic Beasts films, a younger version of the character was played by Jude Law.
Rumors of Lithgow being approached for the role had been circulating for some time, and fans had mixed reactions about the casting. However, the actor’s extensive career, spanning decades across film, television, and theater, has proved his ability to embody complex and powerful characters. His portrayal of Winston Churchill in The Crownwon him critical acclaim, and his chilling performance as Arthur Mitchell in Dexterdemonstrated his range.
The upcoming HBO series is expected to be a fresh adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, offering a new perspective on the Wizarding World. With a new cast set to take on the iconic roles of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, the series aims to bring the magic back to a new generation of viewers.
As for Lithgow, he remains both excited and nervous about the journey ahead. “It’s going to be an adventure,” he admitted. “I know the expectations are high, and I just hope to do justice to such an incredible character.”
The series is expected to begin production this summer and is slated for a 2026 release on HBO.
