Jackie Chan slams Hollywood’s profit-driven mindset: ‘Studios are run by business guys not filmmakers, old movies are better than today’

At the 78th Locarno Film Festival, martial arts icon and Hollywood veteran Jackie Chan didn’t hold back when voicing his concerns about the state of modern cinema. Speaking candidly during the festival’s 8th edition on Sunday, the 71-year-old actor criticised the increasing commercialization of filmmaking, lamenting that passion and artistry are being overshadowed by an obsession with profits.

“I think the old movies are better than today,” Chan remarked. “Right now, a lot of big studios, they’re not filmmakers, they’re business guys. They invest 40 million and think, ‘How can I get it back?’ And you can’t go over. It’s very difficult to make a good movie now.”

Chan, known for blending action, comedy, and death-defying stunts, also reflected on the rarity of all-rounder talents in the industry today. “In all of Asia, only two directors can do everything: the writing, directing, acting, stunt coordinating, stunt fighting, and editing. Only two. One is Sammo Hung, the second one is Jackie Chan. And I’m better because I know how to sing,” he quipped, blending humility with trademark humor.

The legendary actor added that he aspired to be the “Asian Robert De Niro,” signaling his desire to be remembered not only for action sequences but also for depth and versatility in his performances.

Chan’s appearance at Locarno was not just to share his views, it was also a celebration of his remarkable career. On Saturday night, August 9, 2025, he was honored with the prestigious Career Leopard (Pardo alla Carriera) award. This accolade has previously been bestowed on cinematic greats such as Shah Rukh Khan (2024), Claudia Cardinale, Jane Birkin, Johnnie To, Harry Belafonte, and Costa-Gavras.

While accepting the award, Chan took a moment to express gratitude to the collaborators who have supported him over his 64-year journey in the film industry. “Everything I have achieved today is the result of the hard work of the great people who have worked with me. I dedicate this award to the love and peace of the world. Love you all!” he said to thunderous applause.
