Inside the Oscars: How winners are chosen | Voting process explained | Academy Awards

Winning an Oscar, or even being nominated, has the potential to completely transform the career of an actor or filmmaker. The Academy, which is responsible for Hollywood's most prestigious awards, selects the winners each year. But what exactly is the Academy, and how do its members determine the recipients of these coveted awards? Here's what you need to understand about the process of choosing Oscar nominees and winners, as well as the voting process itself. Membership in the Academy cannot be applied for directly. Instead, individuals must be sponsored by two existing Academy members. The Board of Governors ultimately decides whether to extend an invitation for membership to a sponsor. Furthermore, all Oscar nominees are automatically considered for membership in the Academy and do not require sponsorship, according to information provided by the Academy.
