  • Imperfect Women: A suspenseful drama of friends and a murder
  • Strong performances from Moss, Washington, and Mara
  • The series is stylish but relies on predictable storytelling

‘Imperfect Women,’ S1 directed by Nzingha Stewart, Lesli Linka Glatter, Daina Reid, and Jet Wilkinson began streaming on Apple TV+ on 18 March and stars Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington, Elisabeth Moss, Kate Mara, Joel Kinnaman, and Corey Stoll.

‘Imperfect Women’ is a drama that blends suspense with emotional storytelling, exploring how hidden truths and past choices ripple through lives. Adapted from Araminta Hall’s psychological thriller novel, the series centers on the murder of Nancy, a woman whose murder shakes her tight-knit circle of friends and exposes long-buried secrets.

Secrets and past choices

What begins as a tense, character-driven mystery gradually leans on familiar patterns, losing some of the sharpness that initially pulled you in. The show’s polished visuals and carefully crafted scenes give it a glossy, serious feel, yet the narrative occasionally struggles. It is stylish, deliberate, and clearly crafted with care, but style often outweighs substance.

Three friends, one tragic event

The story follows three long-time friends: Mary (Elisabeth Moss), Eleanor (Kerry Washington), and Nancy (Kate Mara). Mary lives a stable life with her dominating professor husband Howard (Corey Stoll); Eleanor runs a prominent non-profit organisation while remaining single; and Nancy, who comes from an impoverished and difficult background, is married to Robert (Joel Kinnaman), son of a wealthy businessman.

Nancy’s murder triggers a police investigation that forces Mary and Eleanor to confront past mistakes and hidden betrayals. Flashbacks reveal the strong bond the women once shared and how it began to unravel. The series also highlights how wealth, privilege, and social pressures shape the decisions these women make. Even minor actions or misunderstandings ripple through their relationships, intensifying tension that isn’t always obvious at first glance.

Predictable at times

While the show tries to explore guilt, regret, and memory, it often leans on predictable storytelling. Many plot points are easy to guess, and scenes meant to feel important sometimes drag or repeat ideas.

The series struggles to keep the suspense after its strong start, and the tension never quite reaches the level set by the first few episodes. The family dynamics and small character moments work well and remain one of the show’s strongest points, but some storylines are left underdeveloped. The series is also lifted by the chemistry between the three lead actors, and their camaraderie keeps viewers interested. It successfully showcases the wealth and power of the Hennessey family, highlighting how shrewd and calculating they can be when it comes to money.

Elisabeth Moss shines

The performances are easily the strongest part of the series. Moss delivers a controlled and steady performance as Mary, portraying a woman who has left behind a promising career to focus on raising her children, now living under the influence of a dominating husband. Washington brings depth to Eleanor, shining in moments where she is vulnerable and reflecting on the mistakes of her past. Mara makes Nancy both charming and emotionally open, giving her character a believable presence.

The chemistry between the three leads feels real and helps hold the story together, even when the plot loses some momentum. Corey Stoll and Joel Kinnaman also give credible performances, delivering a few surprising moments. At times, the show relies on these supporting actors to carry parts of the drama, but even then the writing can feel careful and restrained, keeping the stakes slightly lower than they could be. Overall, the interactions among the main cast remain believable, engaging, and one of the series’ most consistent strengths.

Safe choices over risk

Despite strong performances and a polished presentation, ‘Imperfect Women’ resorts to safe storytelling instead of taking bolder risks. The mystery resolves without leaving a strong impression, and the emotional threads are never fully satisfying.

This mystery thriller is well-acted but uneven, showing moments of real promise alongside predictable turns. It is gripping at times but also easy to anticipate. If only the writers had explored the story more deeply and made it darker and messier, the experience would have been far more engaging. The series is watchable, and the performances keep you interested, but it is not one to revisit.
