Veteran actor John Lithgow has officially taken on the iconic role of Hogwarts’ headmaster, Professor Albus Dumbledore, for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.
The 79-year-old was spotted on set for the first time on October 7, dressed in the character’s signature long robes and sporting a long, wispy white beard that reached his waist, along with white hair and small glasses perched on his nose. The photo, taken on a sandy beach, quickly went viral on social media.
John’s casting was announced earlier this year, and he admitted to ScreenRant that accepting the role was “not an easy decision” as it would define him in the final chapter of his life.
He explained that the time commitment for the series, which plans to adapt all seven of J.K. Rowling’s books into individual seasons, made the decision particularly challenging, but he ultimately agreed.
Production for the HBO series began in July, and filming has been ongoing across various locations in England for the past three months.
Fans have already seen glimpses of the series through on-set photos featuring Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, and the Weasley family boarding the Hogwarts Express at King’s Cross Station.

The cast also includes Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy. Arabella Stanton will portray Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley.
Harry Potter fans are eagerly awaiting to see the new age adaptation of the mystical world, especially with John Lithgow playing the beloved Dumledore.
