Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett recently recalled a time when awards shows weren’t televised and celebrities could enjoy private moments without being filmed.
While appearing on Las Culturistas With Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, the 55-year-old actress suggested that the Oscars should “go back to the day when it wasn’t televised.”
Blanchett expressed her thoughts on the matter, reflecting on how few private spaces remain today. She reminisced about the late ’80s, recalling her love for attending dance parties in Sydney during Mardi Gras. "People were just there. They were so present, you know, they were just together, collectively, having a great time. It was non-aggressive. No one was being recorded. No one cared what anyone did," said the Ocean 8 actress.
During the conversation, the actress was taken aback when hosts Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang revealed that people now try to decode what celebrities are discussing by analyzing televised awards footage.
The co-hosts discussed a viral TikTok trend where users try to interpret what celebrities are saying in event footage, with some surprisingly accurate results. The conversation then turned to common celebrity frustrations at award shows, such as photographers and so-called "lip readers."
When Blanchett questioned the term, the hosts explained that a section of social media is dedicated to deciphering private red carpet conversations by reading lips. Yang criticized the practice as "treacherous," and Blanchett agreed.
Blanchett has appeared in films like The Lord of the Rings, Carol, The Hobbit, Cinderella, Ocean's 8, Thor and more.
