There might be a major casting update on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s long-awaited passion project, Baiju Bawra. According to Deccan Chronicle, Ranbir Kapoor has been finalised as the lead in the musical romance, replacing Ranveer Singh who was earlier cast as the male lead.
Sources close to the development revealed to DC that the pre-production has already begun. Ranbir is reportedly thrilled to embody the led character.
“Ranbir starts his mornings listening to classics from the 1950s, including tracks from the original Baiju Bawra (1952). He’s even been introducing his daughter Raha to this timeless music,” a source was quoted as saying.
Baiju Bawra has been one of SLB’s most cherished projects. The filmmaker has been reportedly working on the idea for over two decades. The original 1952 classic, directed by Vijay Bhatt, starred Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari and is remembered for its iconic music composed by Naushad. SLB, known for his operatic storytelling style and devotion to classical music, has long expressed his desire to reimagine the story for modern audiences.
Initially, Ranveer Singh was widely speculated to headline the film. Reports even suggested that he had begun preparing for the demanding role.

At various points, Alia Bhatt’s name was also linked to the project, sparking hopes of another grand SLB pairing. However with SLB focussing on Love & War, which also stars Ranbir, this project kept getting delayed.
Now, with Ranbir stepping in, the film is said to be finally taking shape. Industry chatter suggests that SLB is keen to mount Baiju Bawra on a lavish scale, staying true to its musical legacy and infusing it with his signature grandeur. Shooting is expected to commence in 2025.
