Camilla Luddington, best known for her role as Dr. Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy, recently shared a personal and surprising health update that has brought clarity to a string of troubling symptoms she’s faced for months. The actress revealed on her podcast Call It What It Is, which she co-hosts with fellow Grey’s alum Jessica Capshaw, that she has been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, a common autoimmune disorder.
Luddington explained that the diagnosis came following a routine blood test just a couple of months ago. “It came back, and my doctor was like, ‘Everything looks great except this one little thing,’” she recalled. That “little thing” turned out to be a significant piece of news. “I remember hearing the words autoimmune disease and thinking, ‘What the f***?’” she admitted. “Then being told that I had something called Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and that it was very common.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, Hashimoto’s disease occurs when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, often leading to fatigue, sensitivity to cold, depression, dry skin, and hair thinning. The actress confessed that she initially attributed her symptoms—extreme tiredness, mental fog, and the need for heavy blankets—to the natural aging process and the demands of parenting two young children. “I thought, ‘This is what the 40s are. Maybe I’m just perimenopausal,’” she said.

Despite feeling alarmed at first, the 41-year-old actress soon found relief in having a name for her condition. “I felt like I had the answer for something that I’ve been knowing is going on,” she said. “And I have health anxiety, so there was a part of me that was like, ‘Am I gaslighting myself?’”
Now on medication to manage the disease, Luddington says she feels hopeful. She’s scheduled to check in with her doctor every six weeks to monitor her progress and adjust treatment as needed.
