Gérard Depardieu sentenced to 18-month suspended term for sexual assault in 2021 film set incident

French cinema icon Gérard Depardieu has been handed an 18-month suspended prison sentence and a €20,000 fine following a sexual assault conviction related to a 2021 incident on the set of Les Volets Verts (The Green Shutters). The ruling marks a significant development in France’s reckoning with sexual misconduct in the entertainment industry, often seen as the country's high-profile test case in the post-#MeToo era.

The incident in question occurred during the filming of the movie, where Depardieu, now 75, was accused of groping a 54-year-old female set dresser. According to NBC News, the actor was found guilty of grabbing her hips during an altercation. While the court acknowledged the actor’s use of vulgar and sexualized language on set, he denied any sexual intent behind his actions.

“I’m not like that,” Depardieu told the court during his four-day trial in March. While admitting to physical contact, he firmly rejected claims that his behavior constituted sexual assault.

The conviction and sentencing were handed down following a recommendation from the Paris public prosecutor. Additionally, a panel of judges is expected to deliver a separate verdict soon concerning another plaintiff involved in a related complaint.

The case has drawn widespread attention, not just because of Depardieu’s celebrity status, but also due to its broader implications for how French society and the film industry are confronting sexual harassment and assault allegations—especially when they involve powerful figures.

Depardieu, a towering figure in French cinema, has starred in more than 250 films throughout his career. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1991 for his iconic role as Cyrano de Bergerac, solidifying his status as one of France’s most celebrated actors.

Though Depardieu has faced previous allegations of sexual misconduct—including a rape accusation filed in 2018, which is still under investigation—this marks the first formal conviction against the veteran actor.

As this case continues to unfold, it underscores the ongoing global conversation about accountability and the evolving legal and social responses to sexual misconduct, particularly within the entertainment industry.
