More than a decade after its release, Happy New Year remains one of Farah Khan’s most commercially successful and star-studded ventures.
The 2014 heist-meets-dance extravaganza brought together a glittering ensemble—Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Abhishek Bachchan, and more—and raked in a whopping ₹397 crore worldwide.
Now, in a nostalgic vlog, the director has taken fans behind the scenes, offering delightful anecdotes and unexpected memories from the film’s making and release.
Visiting Sonu Sood’s opulent Mumbai residence for the vlog, Farah gave viewers a glimpse of his luxurious home and shared laughs over their time working on the film. She fondly recalled how the entire crew lived and worked together in Dubai during the shoot, describing Sonu’s disciplined vegetarian lifestyle.
“For 150 days, Sonu only ate salad,” she revealed, praising his dedication despite limited food options.
In a humorous exchange with Sonu’s wife, Sonali, Farah admitted just how exhaustive the promotional campaign for Happy New Year was. “Hum logon ne itni PR ki hai Happy New Year ki kisi picture ne nahi ki hogi… We even started a TV show, Happy New Year dance competition,” she laughed, referring to the intense 40-day PR blitz followed by a three-week international promotional tour. Few Bollywood films, she claimed, had gone to such lengths to market themselves.
However, the promotional fatigue clearly took its toll. Reminiscing about the grand Dubai premiere, Farah said, “Voh show chodhke, I was doing dubbing and mixing… The film began, and within five minutes, we all fell asleep.” Despite the grandeur of the premiere and the excitement surrounding the release, exhaustion had caught up with the entire star cast, who dozed off just minutes into the screening.
