Emma Heming Willis, wife of legendary actor Bruce Willis, is pushing back against the criticism she has faced as a caregiver, opening up about the emotional toll of public scrutiny.
In a recent interview with Diane Sawyer, Heming Willis revealed the difficult decision to place her husband, 70, in a second, “safer” home amid his continued health decline.
Bruce Willis was diagnosed with aphasia in 2022, followed by frontotemporal dementia the next year. Both conditions severely impact communication, personality, and behavior.
Following the interview, Heming Willis shared her thoughts in a candid Instagram video on Saturday. “What I knew is that by sharing some of our intimate information that we would see these two camps, right? It would be people with an opinion versus people with an actual experience,” she said.
“And it’s been a perfect example to see in the comments section. That is what caregivers are up against,” she continued. “Judgment from others and criticism from others.”

Heming Willis also previewed her forthcoming book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, set for release on September 9. Reading aloud from the book, she shared a message to caregivers everywhere: “Everyone will have an opinion, but you have to remind yourself that most don’t have the experience to back it up. And if that’s the case, they shouldn’t offer their two cents about it, and you shouldn’t pay them any mind.”
She further emphasized the uniqueness of each caregiving situation: “Even if someone is closely familiar with dementia or the condition you are caring for, they aren’t in your home. So they don’t know how your person is behaving or your family dynamics.”
Speaking to Sawyer, Heming Willis reflected on the difficulty of her decision to move Bruce into professional care. “It was one of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make so far,” she admitted. “But I knew first and foremost, Bruce would want that for our daughters. He would want them to be in a home that was more tailored to their needs, not his needs.”
Bruce Willis shares daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, with Heming Willis. He also has three adult daughters with his ex-wife Demi Moore: Rumer, 37; Scout, 34; and Tallulah, 31.
