In a disappointing development for fans of entertainment journalism, E! News has officially been canceled as a linear television program, according to reports by The Hollywood Reporter.
On September 25, the long-running nightly entertainment-news program, which debuted on television in 1991, will end its run.
Notably, the show had previously paused for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic but then resumed airing. E! News will continue to function as a digital brand even though its television broadcast is ending.
According to sources cited by The Hollywood Reporter, employees were notified of the cancellation earlier today. Even though tonight's show will be repeated, new episodes should resume airing the following week.
From their base at Terrace Studios, Access Hollywood and Access Daily will carry on with their production without interruption.
The cancellation coincides with NBCUniversal's significant corporate reorganisation, which has resulted in the division of the company into two distinct organisations.
One will comprise the NBC broadcast network, Peacock, Bravo, and its production studios, and the other, called Versant, will include cable networks such as USA Network, Syfy, E!, CNBC, MSNBC, Oxygen, and the Golf Channel, as well as online sites like Fandango, Rotten Tomatoes, and Golf Now.
CEO Mark Lazarus, CFO and COO Anand Kini, and Chairman David Novak will lead Versant. Several other key leadership roles will be filled by executives drawn from within NBCUniversal.
Even though E! News will no longer broadcast on television, the E! channel still airs acquired content and original shows like Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour and Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind. The channel will also maintain its popular red carpet coverage and broadcast of major events like the Critics Choice Awards in January.
