IIFA winner Mozez Singh, after "Famous," is shifting gears. While documentaries are now close to his heart, he's prioritizing fiction projects. Speaking exclusively to Moneycontrol, he revealed his current focus lies in crafting new fictional narratives.

“Well, I’m dying to get back to doing something in the fiction space, so I’m not thinking of any docs right now. But I have to say that it was such an incredible experience making this doc, that if something amazing comes to mind that I want to do, or if somebody offers me something in the documentary space, I will totally, totally explore it. Because now, when I was doing this, I didn’t have the knowledge or the experience or the confidence or whatever to make a documentary. It all came during the journey of making it. Now, I feel very, very comfortable with the idea of doing a documentary. And I’m going to, I mean, I’m definitely going to explore anything that comes my way, which is exciting. But as of now, what I’m doing next is absolute fiction. I’ve got three, four things in development. And I’m going to just see which one works and turns out the best. So I haven’t really locked what I’m going to do next. But I’ve really seen something in the fiction space before. And they’re all very exciting and challenging projects and something that I haven’t tried previously. So let’s see which one happens.”

Reflecting on his recent documentary, Singh shared the challenges he faced in bringing his subject, the highly private Honey, into the spotlight. “You know, it’s a matter of building trust, right? Because, I mean, we also didn’t know each other when we started working with each other. I mean, of course, we’ve met a few times and we’ve discussed how we were going to work with each other. And I have been very honest with him and I’ve told him that I want to make a very, very truthful and a very honest and a very personal film. Because I feel like nobody knew the man behind all the pop star aura, right? And so that was my intention. And when Netflix was just pointing me with the offer, I said that this is the kind of film I’m going to make, if I’m going to make this film. And everybody was very cool about it. So that was great. But as far as asking him and getting into personal spaces, it’s a matter of trust. It doesn’t happen like on the first day, right? Because he has to understand that I’m going to, whatever I ask him and whatever, and the places that I’m going to, he has to tell me with a lot of, he has to tell me with lots of trust and he has to understand the fact that I’m just trying to show him in a very truthful light. I’m not trying to really like ruin his reputation or to destroy his career or do any of those things for this film. I’m looking here to tell the truth about him. And I think, I think he understood that. That’s why the film was worth also, because he respected where I was coming from as a filmmaker and gave me the answers and the questions and the insights that I needed to tell a very truthful story. So I think it was something that he built over time.”

Looking ahead, Singh remains open to revisiting the documentary format if the right project comes along. “I mean, I hope to. I hope to. If I make a documentary, which I will, I hope it will be something very, very interesting, very challenging, because documentaries are very challenging. I mean, all of filmmaking is very challenging, but documentaries are very challenging in the sense that there’s no real script, right? You know which story you want to tell, but there’s no script. So, the script kind of is very organic and evolves on its own over time. Which is a very different way of working. Because you must constantly adjust. It keeps shifting shapes. So, you must constantly adjust to the changes and what’s happening and all that stuff. Which in the beginning was very crazy for me, but the more I got used to it, the more I fell in love with it. With that process as well, because it allows you to be spontaneous, which is really, nice.”
