Raaj Kumar, one of Bollywood’s most iconic actors, had an interesting journey before entering the film industry. Born as Kulbhushan Pandit, he served as a sub-inspector with the Mumbai Police at the Mahim Police Station in the early 1950s. Despite having a stable and respected career in law enforcement, Raaj Kumar harbored dreams of doing something bigger and more creative.
In 1952, he decided to leave his police job and take a leap of faith into the world of Hindi cinema. His first film, Rangeeli, did not make a big impact, but he did not lose hope. Gradually, his talent, unique dialogue delivery, and distinct style gained recognition. It was in 1957, with his role in Nausherwan-e-Adil, that he began to establish himself as a rising star. Later that year, his small but impactful role in the legendary film Mother India further cemented his position in the industry.
Known for his signature dialogue style and his iconic word “Jaani,” Raaj Kumar brought a royal charm to his performances. He appeared in numerous cinematic gems, including Waqt, Hamraaz, and Pakeezah. One of his quirks was his insistence on wearing white shoes in every scene, a style statement that became synonymous with his personality.
