In just five days, Rajinikanth's eagerly awaited Independence Day release Coolie has surpassed the Rs 200 crore mark at the Indian box office. In stark contrast to its fantastic opening weekend, the movie saw a first decline on Monday.
According to industry trackers, the film collected Rs 12 crore across all languages on August 18, a significant drop from Sunday’s impressive haul of Rs 35 crore. Out of this, the Tamil version alone accounted for Rs 23 crore, underlining the superstar’s enduring pull in his home state.
Within five days of its August 14 release, the movie had collected Rs 206. 65 crore in India, and over the course of its first weekend, it had already made over Rs 400 crore globally.
Interestingly, the Hindi version of Coolie has shown consistent traction since its debut. On Sunday, it managed to bring in Rs 4.75 crore, suggesting that Rajinikanth’s appeal continues to transcend linguistic barriers.
Released on the eve of Independence Day, August 14, the film had an explosive start, raking in ₹65 crore on its opening day — with an astonishing Rs 44.5 crore coming from the Tamil belt alone. Day two saw the film earn Rs 54.75 crore domestically, followed by Rs 39.5 crore on Saturday. While the numbers remain robust, the mixed critical reception and fluctuating audience word-of-mouth may have tempered its box office momentum.
Despite the slowdown, Coolie has already carved its place in history as Rajinikanth’s biggest opening film to date. However, it narrowly missed setting a new benchmark for Tamil cinema, as Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo continues to hold the record with a staggering Rs 66 crore opening.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie is Rajinikanth’s 171st outing on the silver screen. The film boasts a star-studded cast including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir and Sathyaraj, with a special cameo appearance by Aamir Khan, adding to its pan-Indian appeal. Backed by Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures, the project was one of the year’s most awaited cinematic events.
Coolie is also competing head-to-head with another high-profile release, War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, which hit theatres the same day. While both films have been performing strongly, Rajinikanth’s latest outing has undeniably captured the spotlight, further cementing his reputation as one of Indian cinema’s most bankable legends.
