Italian screen icon Claudia Cardinale, one of the defining actresses of European and Hollywood cinema in the 1960s, has died at the age of 87. Her agent confirmed the news to French outlet AFP, saying Claudia Cardinale passed away in Nemours near Paris with her children by her side.
The actress from Tunisia, who was praised for her grace and strong on-screen persona, left a legacy that lasted for over 60 years.
From Tunisia to Fame
Claudia Cardinale, who was born and reared in Tunisia, gained notoriety in 1957 after winning the title of "Most Beautiful Italian Girl in Tunisia." After winning that prize, she went to the Venice Film Festival, where filmmakers were immediately drawn to her stunning beauty and captivating personality.
Before long, she was being compared to European greats like Alain Delon after making her debut opposite Omar Sharif in Goha (1958). Their joint roles in The Leopard (1963) and Rocco and His Brothers (1960) continue to be among her most well-known roles.
Hollywood and Beyond
By the mid-1960s, Claudia Cardinale was a global name. She starred opposite David Niven in The Pink Panther (1963) before moving into Hollywood productions such as Blindfold (1965), The Professionals (1966), and Don’t Make Waves (1967) with Tony Curtis.

She received critical acclaim in 1984 for her portrayal of Benito Mussolini's mistress, Claretta Petacci, in the film Claretta.
