A mirror to society’s darkest silence
‘Chiraiya’ is a series that holds up a mirror to society and makes sharp, uncomfortable comments on marital rape. It is a moving story that focuses on the trauma of a newly married woman when she is subjected to abuse within marriage. The show questions the age-old patriarchal system seen across many parts of North India. It also looks at the legal challenges a woman faces while reporting such crimes and takes a hard look at how men are often raised with a sense of entitlement. ‘Chiraiya’ stays engaging and emotionally heavy for most of its run. It only slips in the final stretch, where it leans on a few forced moments, but by then it has already made its point. It is the kind of series that forces you to think.
A family that hides an ugly truth
The story is set in a joint family in Lucknow. The eldest member, Sukumar Bhramar (Sanjay Mishra), is the patriarch who appears balanced and commands respect. His daughter-in-law Kamlesh (Divya Dutta) shares a warm bond with him, almost like a father and daughter. Kamlesh always wanted a son, and after having a daughter, she turns to her brother-in-law Arun (Siddharth Shaw) and raises him like her own. She believes she has given him the right values and that he can do no wrong. But things change when Arun marries Pooja (Prasanna Bisht). On their wedding night, despite Pooja’s request to wait due to ill health, Arun ignores her and forces himself on her. As this continues and Pooja’s condition worsens, Kamlesh slowly begins to understand her pain and decides to step in. What follows is a slow but powerful shift within the family.
When silence breaks and questions rise
The series works largely because of its writing and rooted setting. It takes a restrained approach instead of being loud or preachy. Rather than blaming individuals, it questions the larger system and upbringing that shapes such behaviour. The narrative is driven mainly by its women characters, who are shown with strength and clarity. Kamlesh’s journey is especially important, as she begins to question the very beliefs she once stood by. Pooja, on the other hand, refuses to stay silent and chooses to fight for justice. When the system fails her, she even considers extreme steps, highlighting her desperation. This balance between silence and resistance gives the series its emotional weight.
Divya Dutta and Prasanna Bisht lift the show
The performances lift the show further. Divya Dutta is excellent as Kamlesh, bringing depth to a woman whose world is limited to her home and family. She captures the character’s shift with ease. Prasanna Bisht is convincing as Pooja and portrays both vulnerability and strength well. Siddharth Shaw as Arun is average, and his scenes with Pooja lack impact. Sanjay Mishra fits his role, playing a man who seems progressive on the surface but carries regressive ideas within. The supporting cast also adds weight, making the family dynamic feel real and grounded. Their presence helps ground the story and adds more layers to the narrative.
A strong message with few missteps
‘Chiraiya’ keeps you invested for most of its runtime but stumbles towards the end. Some scenes feel exaggerated, especially when Kamlesh takes on a symbolic role and delivers a sermon-like moment. The sequence where Kamlesh tries to cut herself with a blade to feel Pooja’s pain comes across as forced and trivialized. By then, the series had clearly delivered its message. It remains a grounded and largely believable drama that tackles a difficult and relevant subject, even if it is not without flaws. The series leaves you disturbed and thinking about the silence that surrounds such crimes. It also reminds you how easily society looks away when abuse hides behind the name of marriage—an excuse that continues to shield one of the most ignored and brutal forms of violence.
