The chairman and visionary founder of HYBE Corporation, the force behind the international K-pop sensation BTS, Bang Si-hyuk, is currently embroiled in major legal issues.

Allkpop reports that Bang has been charged with unfair and fraudulent trading practices under South Korea's Capital Markets Act, which has caused a stir in the entertainment and financial industries.

The controversy is the result of an investigation by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) of South Korea, which recently called a meeting of its Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) to determine how serious Bang's disciplinary action should be.

According to the allegations, he deceived investors by downplaying HYBE's IPO plans, which led them to sell their shares to a purportedly affiliated private equity fund (PEF). This allegedly happened as HYBE was covertly getting ready to go public.

When HYBE eventually did launch its IPO, Bang reportedly reaped substantial benefits through a 30% return-sharing agreement with the PEF.

This arrangement, crucially, was not disclosed during the IPO process. If the investigation concludes that Bang earned more than 5 billion KRW (approximately USD 3.64 million) from the deal, he could face a minimum of five years in prison—or even life imprisonment—under South Korean law.

In response to the allegations, HYBE issued a formal statement, saying: “All transactions were carried out legally by undergoing thorough legal reviews. We apologise for causing concern due to news related to our IPO process. We are actively cooperating with financial authorities and the police by providing detailed explanations and submitting relevant documents regarding the matters currently under investigation.”

Although there are reports of HYBE conducting an internal investigation, no official confirmation has been provided by the company as yet.

Leading K-pop artists such as BTS, Tomorrow X Together, LE SSERAFIM, NewJeans, BOYNEXTDOOR, and KATSEYE are managed by HYBE, one of Asia's most prominent entertainment labels.

The company's business practices are under intense scrutiny as a result of the ongoing investigation, and the K-pop community around the world is closely monitoring developments.
