Brazilian fashion influencer Adair Mendes Dutra Junior, known online as Junior Dutra, died on October 3 at the age of 31 after battling complications from a cosmetic procedure known as “fox eyes” surgery. The influencer had previously spoken about his deteriorating health following the operation, which he underwent in March under celebrity surgeon Fernando Garbi, according to People magazine.

The “fox eyes” trend, popularized by models and celebrities, involves lifting and elongating the outer corners of the eyes to achieve a sharp, feline-like appearance. It can be done through surgery or thread lifting, but in Dutra’s case, the invasive procedure reportedly led to severe complications that spiraled over time.

In an interview with Brazilian network Feed TV earlier this year, Dutra detailed the health issues that followed the surgery. He described battling facial swelling, bruising, and shortness of breath caused by what doctors later identified as a serious infection. His appearance had visibly changed, and he often used his platform to warn others about the risks of cosmetic procedures gone wrong.

His friend Gean Souza spoke to Quem magazine after Dutra’s death, explaining that the influencer’s condition worsened rapidly. “He became very ill, felt short of breath, and was taken to the nearest public hospital,” Souza said. “Unfortunately, he didn’t make it.”

Before his death, Dutra had taken legal action against Dr. Garbi. Brazilian outlet Portal Leo Dias obtained court records showing that Dutra accused the surgeon of six offenses, including illegal medical practice, fraud, and serious bodily harm. He had also requested an official investigation into the procedure.

In response to the allegations, Garbi’s legal team issued a statement on Instagram denying any connection between the doctor and Dutra’s death. The statement, written in Portuguese, said the claims were being made by “people eager for brief moments of notoriety.” It further warned that “all legal measures, in the civil and criminal spheres, will be taken against the authors of the insults and slander” directed toward Dr. Garbi.
