Singer Zubeen Garg’s untimely death has left an irreplaceable void in India’s cultural landscape, especially in his home state of Assam. The 52-year-old musician, actor, and filmmaker tragically passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, and the probe in underway into the death.
His demise had sent shock waves of grief across the country, with the Assam government declaring a three-day state mourning to honor the beloved artist.
Thousands gathered in Guwahati to bid farewell to the icon as he was cremated with full state honors. Zubeen’s music transcended boundaries, blending folk, classical, and modern styles in a way that spoke to generations.
From his chart-topping Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” to countless Assamese classics, his voice became a bridge between regional and national culture.
In a heartfelt gesture, the organisers of the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival (BVFF) have postponed the 10th edition of the event, which was originally scheduled to take place from December 4 to 7, 2025.
In their official statement, the organisers said the decision was taken “to honor the loss of Assam’s most beloved cultural icon.” They described Zubeen as a creative force who defined the spirit of Assam and inspired artists across mediums.
The statement read that BVFF, being deeply rooted in Assam’s cultural fabric, could not celebrate cinema while the state was in mourning. The organisers also assured that refunds for ticket bookings and film submissions would be processed soon. The festival is now expected to take place in early 2026.
Meanwhile, the Assam government has announced several initiatives to preserve Zubeen Garg’s legacy. His ashes are being distributed to organisations and individuals through an online application system, allowing fans across the state to pay their respects. Memorials will also be built in Kamarkuchi, where he was cremated with full state honors — a place closely tied to his childhood and musical beginnings.
Zubeen’s passing marks the end of an era for Assamese music and culture. The decision to postpone the Brahmaputra Valley Film Festival is not just a symbolic act but a collective pause to remember a man whose art, voice, and vision defined an entire generation.
Singer Zubeen Garg’s tragic death at 52 in Singapore has left Assam and India mourning the loss of a beloved cultural icon, as authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding his passing.
The Assam Police has formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the case. So far, seven people have been arrested, including his manager, event organiser, two personal security officers, a bandmate, and others who were present on the yacht where he drowned. Singapore authorities are cooperating closely with the investigation, and the SIT has requested CCTV footage from local agencies. Investigators are also probing large financial transactions found in the accounts of the security officers. To ensure full transparency, a judicial inquiry has been ordered, as the state and fans await clarity on the circumstances that led to the musician’s untimely death.
