Mira Nair is all over the headlines today. This time, it’s not for her celebrated legacy in filmmaking, but as the proud mother of Zohran Mamdani, the newly minted Mayor of New York City.
Ever since Zohran’s historic win today, becoming the first Muslim and African-born South Asian to lead the city, Mira Nair has been a constant presence in the news cycle. Let’s revisit her long body of work spanning over three decades, of course, alongside her role in shaping a socially conscious political leader.
A globally rooted childhood

Mira Nair was born on October 15, 1957, in Rourkela, Orissa (now Odisha), India, making her roots firmly Indian even as her work and life took on a global span. Her father, Amrit Lal Nair, was an IAS officer, and her mother, Praveen Nair, a social worker.
One can safely say the combination of public service and social awareness shaped her early trajectory. She pursued sociology at Delhi University and then attended Harvard University on scholarship, where she studied visual and environmental studies and increasingly turned to filmmaking.
A distinctive directorial voice
Mira Nair is recognised as a filmmaker who consistently explores identity, displacement, and hybridity. Her early documentary works led to her breakthrough feature, Salaam Bombay! that released in 1988 and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.

She followed this with Mississippi Masala in 1991 (yes, she directed Denzel Washington!), bringing the story of Ugandan-Indian immigrants in Mississippi to the silver screen. Her films like Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996) and Monsoon Wedding (2001) further established her style — vibrant, emotionally rich, and culturally layered. Monsoon Wedding won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.
The Namesake over Harry Potter
In 2007, Mira Nair was approached to direct Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but she declined in favour of working on The Namesake. The decision was a personal one, reportedly influenced by Zohran Mamdani’s conviction that she was the only person who could do justice to the story.

Adapted from Jhumpa Lahiri’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and written by Sooni Taraporevala, the film explores the journey of an Indian immigrant family in New York, centering on a son torn between heritage and identity. The film won the Dartmouth Film Award and was honoured with the Pride of India award at the Bollywood Movie Awards.
In July 2020, journalist Ellen Barry revealed that her Pulitzer Prize-nominated story The Jungle Prince of Delhi, originally published in The New York Times, would be turned into a web series for Amazon Studios with Mira Nair at the helm.
A life decorated with awards and global impact

Mira Nair has received numerous international awards and honours. In 2012, she was awarded India’s Padma Bhushan for her contributions to culture and cinema. Though she works globally, she has been based in New York for many years and leads film-lab initiatives such as the Maisha Film Lab in Uganda.
The mother behind NYC’s first Muslim Mayor

Mira Nair married scholar-activist Mahmood Mamdani in 1991, and their son, Zohran Mamdani, was born in Kampala, Uganda. They later moved to New York. Zohran has said his upbringing, rooted in stories, filmmaking and global justice, was shaped by both parents. “One thing that my parents have taught me, among many, is the necessity of addressing what is actually happening as opposed to pretending that it’s not,” he told Bon Appétit earlier this year. Mira herself reflected, “What he has, which I’ve not seen in any politician on these shores, is humility. He’s a listener.”
Art and activism
Mira Nair has always been vocal about global politics and human rights. In July 2013, she declined an invitation to the Haifa International Film Festival as a “guest of honour” in protest against Israel’s policies toward Palestine. “I will go to Israel when the walls come down. I will go to Israel when occupation is gone... I will go to Israel when the state does not privilege one religion over another. I will go to Israel when Apartheid is over,” she wrote on Twitter. Her decision was endorsed by the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel (PACBI), who commended her for taking a stand “that helps to highlight the struggle against colonialism and apartheid.”
Supporting Zohran’s political journey

When Zohran’s campaign to become New York City’s mayor gained international attention, Mira Nair’s role as both mother and public figure came into focus. Although she says he didn’t turn to her for political advice, her filmmaking ethos and his upbringing in a socially conscious household clearly intersect. She noted how Zohran absorbed earlier lessons of storytelling and activism, “I made films and wrote books about the haves and the have-nots. My art is fuelled by the injustice of that.”
Still telling stories, still shaping culture

Even as her son prepares to take office, Mira Nair remains active creatively. Recently, she directed the BBC series A Suitable Boy, which received praise for its lush visual storytelling and faithful adaptation of Vikram Seth's novel.
In March 2021, it was also announced that she would direct a 10-episode Disney+ series reimagining the National Treasure franchise with a new cast. National Treasure: Edge of History was released in 2022.
As Zohran Mamdani steps into history as the first Muslim Mayor of New York City, the world is turning once again to the woman who raised him — a pioneering filmmaker, an unflinching activist, and now, a proud mother whose work and worldview have shaped generations. Even as the news cycles buzz with victory speeches and viral videos, it’s also a moment to celebrate the stories behind the scenes, the values passed down, and the journeys that bring art and activism full circle.
