Bobby Deol has never shied away from expressing how deeply rooted his relationship with his father and veteran actor Dharmendra, is. A moment that captured this vividly resurfaced during the release of Rocky Aur Ranii Ki Prem Kahaani, where Dharmendra played a gentle, romantic, and memorable role.

While audiences celebrated the veteran actor’s charm, Bobby found himself unable to separate the performance from the man he loves.

In an old interview with Pinkvilla, long before the frenzy around Animal, Bobby recalled the first time he watched Karan Johar’s film. He didn’t know the story. There was no emotional preparation. He walked in simply wanting to enjoy his father on the big screen. But when Dharmendra’s character dies in the narrative, it struck him in a way that went far beyond cinema.

“I couldn’t stop crying. I was at Karan’s trial show and I just couldn’t handle it. I left. I didn’t even see the ending.”

For Bobby, watching his father die on screen is not an artistic moment. It’s a wound. “That’s how we are. We love each other very much. We’re very connected as a family.”

Dharmendra’s performance in the film had created quite a wave. People spoke about the romance, the warmth, the surprising boldness of his onscreen kiss with Shabana Azmi.

But for Bobby, the beauty of the performance only made the emotional impact heavier. “No other actor could have done that role,” he said. To him, it wasn’t simply a performance. It was his father’s soul — vulnerable and present — on screen.

The incident wasn’t isolated. Bobby even shared that his mother went through something similar when she watched Animal — specifically his own death scene. In both cases, art collapsed into reality. Family blurred into fiction. Love overshadowed craft.

Rocky Aur Ranii Ki Prem Kahaani starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead and was widely appreciated for its emotional richness, music, and old-school romantic heart. Dharmendra’s role, though not lengthy, left a lasting imprint — a reminder of the era he represents and the warmth audiences still feel for him.
