Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna’s latest horror-comedy, Thamma, is proving to be one of Maddock Films’ biggest crowd-pullers in recent years. Riding on strong post-Diwali hype and solid advance bookings, the film opened to packed houses across major metros, marking one of the highest openings of Ayushmann’s career.
The Diwali release turned out to be a smart move. Thamma opened with an impressive Rs 24 crore net collection on Day 1, followed by Rs 18 crore on Day 2, taking its domestic total to approximately Rs 42 crore. With a day-zero preview adding another Rs 10 crore, the film has already inched close to the Rs 50 crore mark in just two days. That’s no small feat for a horror-comedy—especially one released in a market still recovering from the Diwali weekend rush.
What’s working for Thamma is its blend of quirky humor, supernatural tension, and smart pop-culture callbacks. Ayushmann’s portrayal of Alok Gupta, an ordinary man caught in an extraordinary situation, has been praised for balancing slapstick comedy with genuine fear. Rashmika Mandanna’s energetic presence adds freshness to the narrative, while Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s eccentric vampire act is turning into a viral talking point.
However, the film did see a dip in occupancy rates. After a 35% turnout on Day 1, Day 2 saw around 26% occupancy overall. The evening and night shows provided a much-needed lift, especially in urban circuits like Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Ahmedabad. Pune’s numbers were moderate, while cities like Lucknow, Jaipur, and Bengaluru showed mixed results. In contrast, Chandigarh, Surat, and Kolkata saw relatively lower footfalls.
Despite that, Thamma’s early box office trajectory is promising. The film has already entered Ayushmann’s list of top ten highest-grossing openers, ranking just below Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, while still far from dethroning Dream Girl. For Rashmika, Thamma stands as her sixth-highest grosser to date, and for Nawazuddin, it’s his second-biggest earner after his crime thrillers.
If the film continues to hold steady through the weekend, it could comfortably cross the Rs 75 crore mark by Sunday and possibly challenge Stree 2’s lifetime numbers. For Maddock Films, Thamma is another sign that their signature horror-comedy formula still has plenty of bite left.
