Popular playback singer Sonu Nigam recently achieved a new milestone in his career. He was honoured with the National Lata Mangeshkar Award in Indore on Sunday for his outstanding contribution to the field of light music.

The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, presented the award to Sonu Nigam at the birthplace of the late veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar on her 96th birth anniversary.

According to PTI, the CM said during the ceremony, “Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar took Indian music to new heights with her voice. This award, given in her name, is unique. It is a tribute to the contribution of those artists who have left an indelible mark in the field of music.”

He added, “The state government is honoured to present the award to Sonu Nigam.”

The 52-year-old singer got emotional while reacting to the honour. He admitted that being honoured on the same stage where he had performed at the Lata Mangeshkar Alankaran ceremony thirty years prior made him feel incredibly humbled.

Sonu Nigam said, “Lata ji is not only an inspiration, but also a living tradition of music. I feel blessed to receive this honour. This moment is one of the most special moments of my life.”

The singer also delighted the live audience by singing some of his songs.

For the unversed, Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore on September 28, 1929. She passed away on February 6, 2022, at the age of 92 in Mumbai.
