Shah Bano Begum's legal heirs have recently filed a petition in the Indore High Court for an immediate halt to the release of the upcoming movie "Haq," which stars Emraan Hashmi and Yami Gautam Dhar.

According to India Today, the family members have claimed in the filing that the upcoming film allegedly offends the feelings of the Muslim community and presents Sharia law in a misogynistic manner. The petition was submitted through their lawyer, Adv Tousif Warsi.

Additionally, they allegedly assert that Shah Bano Begum's legal heirs do not grant the film's creators any legal rights.

The case is expected to be heard soon by the Indore High Court. Hitesh Jain, Parinaam Law, and Ameet Naik of Naik & Naik are representing the film's producers.

Meanwhile, the initial reports have suggested that the filmmakers had received a legal notice to stop the film due to allegations that it depicted Shah Bano's personal life without her legal heir's consent. Defamation and violations of publicity and personality rights are also mentioned.

Directed by Suparn Verma, Haq promises to revisit the complex debates surrounding personal law, gender equality, and justice that arose during the Shah Bano case.

According to the film's creators, Haq starts as a love story before turning into a heated discussion about a contentious issue that still needs to be resolved. The movie's courtroom scenes draw attention to more general policy issues, like Article 44 of the Constitution's Uniform Civil Code.

The film is set in 1980s India and revolves around Shazia Bano as she seeks justice when her husband stops child support after remarrying. His attempt to silence her with triple talaq sparks a national debate on women's rights and faith.

Haq is set to release on November 7, 2025.
