Girija Oak reveals receiving ‘creepy’ messages after overnight fame and national crush tag

Girija Oak is a seasoned actor with a two-decade-plus career in Marathi and Hindi cinema. She was recently thrust into the spotlight following a video of her in a blue saree that went viral. The clip triggered an Internet frenzy, with social media users dubbing her as the ‘new national crush.’

In a follow-up interview with The Lallantop, Girija addressed the sudden attention, revealing, “Someone asked if anything has changed. I said no I’m not getting extra work offers.”

While the sudden admiration surprised her, Girija soon began to experience the darker side of overnight fame. In candid remarks, she revealed that her social-media inbox started receiving disturbing messages. Some asked exploitative questions such as, “What is the price to spend an hour with you?”

That wasn’t all. Along with unsolicited DMs, she discovered that AI-morphed and edited images of her, often explicit or sexualized, were circulating online. These images, she emphasized, were not consented to; they objectified her in ways she found deeply uncomfortable.

As a mother to a 12-year-old son, Girija expressed her concern and said she’s worried these objectionable images may remain online indefinitely, potentially impacting how her son perceives her when he grows older.

Girija Oak started her career as a teenager with the Marathi film Manini. She took on small roles in Hindi films like Taare Zameen Par and Shor in the City, while steadily building her reputation in Marathi cinema.

Over the years, she became a familiar face on television with shows such as Ladies Special and Modern Love: Mumbai.
